The Heart of Worship

Some time ago, I had an opportunity to go to a very remote village to visit the villagers. It was a very fruitful outing for 7 of us - myself, Pastor Daniel, Alex, Jonathan, Jimmy, Shirley and our youngest member of the team, Nathan. The intention of our visit was to bless these villagers, to encourage them in the Lord and to get to know them better. After driving for about 3 hours, we finally reached the area where this village was located, but we had to park our 4 wheel-drives a few kilometers away from the village as road for cars and bikes ended there. Then we changed our mode of transport to another type of 4 wheel-drive (see pix) and that was the beginning of our adventure.

It felt like a never ending ride on the "rail". With Jonathan and I sharing one "coach" and holding frantically onto just anything and at the same time trying hard not to lose our balance we proceeded with our adventurous journey. We had two strong village men paddling with bamboo poles. During the anxious roller coaster journey, we passed through dry land and swampy-muddy areas. We finally arrived at the village in one piece 30 minutes later.... all soggy and wet. All my bones were rattling after the whole episode. But WOW what an exciting experience !!!

We had a wonderful meeting that night. We shared God's Word with the villagers and prayed for the sick. We saw how their faces lit up after the prayers as God touched them.

The next morning, being Sunday, we worshipped God in their hut-like church. Their church was a stark contrast to our church in Kuching. Despite a total lack of grandeur , the worship was filled with a heart-felt passion for God.

I love worshipping God and I enjoyed the atmosphere as God moved in our midst. During the worship time, I saw people lifting up their hands to God, enjoying His presence. It was as if they were standing beneath a waterfall, with the water pouring down all over them...soaking them with His presence. The sweetness of God's presence was all over their faces ! We shared with them the goodness of God and how we can live as children of light. I also shared with them about how God had helped me and delivered me from difficult situations in my life. I could sense that the people here desired more of God in their lives. They have simple faith in God and they simply trust God. That's what faith is supposed to be.

I came to realize that as we fill our lives with so much entertainment and the latest gadgets , we could easily lose sight of more important things in life. We could end up worshipping things instead of God. People would worship celebrities, money, sports, careers, hobbies, cars, houses, blogs etc....and musicians like me have a tendency to worship the music ! Let's go back to the basics. Let's ask God to lead us back to Him, worship Him and Him alone. Make no mistake to whom you should worship. The heart of worship is Jesus. When we intentionally make worship a lifestyle , we will never lose sight of the way our lives should go.

We traveled 3 hours with the intention to bless these wonderful people here, but instead were blessed tremendously with an eye-opening worship experience! Wow, isn't that great !!
